Bruxelles – (com) Today, during its constitutive meeting, the new standing committee on Public Health (SANT) as its Chair and its four Vice-Chairs.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has clearly shown that today’s challenges in health know no borders. It has also shown how easily global supply chains can be torn or broken and the excessive external dependence of the EU in health resources. At the same time, COVID19, but also other health challenges, show how much more effective and efficient we can be by working together instead of competing for limited resources, which increases costs”, stated the EPP Chair of the Public Health committee in the European Parliament (SANT), Adam Jarubas MEP.
“In the past term, we witnessed the success of the adoption of the first such holistic strategy as the European Beating Cancer Plan, which we called for and worked on in the Parliament. We want to continue this work with even greater commitment, emphasized Jarubas. This and many other actions in the area of health already taken, arouse hopes and great social expectations for greater EU involvement in health. Not all remember that this is not new, but a return to abandoned ambitions from the beginning of the European Communities. The Commission is responding to these expectations by developing the Health Union, but it needs a reliable partner, with an appropriate citizens mandate and knowledge of the needs of citizens in every corner of the EU”.
“I believe that the first permanent, legislative, independent full Public Health committee in the history of European Parliament and the EU can be such a partner, and that this is the right response to public expectations for greater European involvement in healthcare, which we cannot disappoint, support which we cannot waste“, he concluded.
“Today we have constituted the SANT Committee with full legislative powers. This is a clear message from the European Parliament that health must remain a priority for the EU. I am delighted to continue my work as SANT Coordinator in the EPP Group”, tweeted Mr. Tomislav Sokol MEP.
On last 18 December 2024, the plenary adopted the Parliament’s political group leaders decision to upgrade the SANT sub-committee status to a standing committee.
